ACOG Considers Early Pregnancy Within Scope of Gynecology Care
Distinction relevant to professional liability coverage for those in gynecology-only practices

THURSDAY, June 27 (HealthDay News) -- The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) considers early pregnancy care to be within the realm of gynecology and gynecologic practice, according to a Committee Opinion published in the July issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The ACOG Committees on Gynecologic Practice, Obstetric Practice, and Professional Liability have updated a June 2008 Committee Opinion on professional liability and gynecology-only practice from June 2008.

According to the report, ACOG fellows may choose to limit their practices to gynecology only, and may elect not to carry professional liability coverage for obstetrics. However, early pregnancy care is considered within the realm of gynecology and gynecologic practice. Early pregnancy failure, ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous or elective abortion, and early prenatal care can be undertaken in gynecology-only practices, and consequently liability insurers should provide appropriate coverage.

"Liability insurers that provide coverage for gynecology-only practices should provide coverage for clinical practice activities that involve the management of first-trimester and early second-trimester pregnancy and its complications," the authors write.
